Friends are the family we choose

I don’t believe in such a thing as a strong bond between family members. When it comes to parents or siblings, yes … sure, everyone can feel that but coming to other family members I believe they have to prove as much that they are worth being on your side as friends do.

I know that sounds a quite negative, in fact I am a total family person but from my experience I can say that we should be careful with whom we call family. I had a lot of not so good experiences with close and not so close relatives and came to the conclusion that I’d rather choose my family and that only being related to me doesn’t give anyone the right to be involved in my life.

When I was younger I thought… oh, they are my family, so they love me, right? But I was proven to be wrong. You may take for granted that people love their partners, kids, siblings… but apart from that I learned to be careful.

Luckily I have a lot of friends who are like brothers and sisters to me but on the other hand I have cousins I more or less gew up with who are like strangers to me. And that’s sad. I always thought they would be my replacement siblings as I don’t have any for real but I learned that as is a “normal” friendship this family relations are also something that needs to be invested in. You have to invest time and energy and most importantly love.

And you know what? I don’t care anymore about people I should care for because I know them all my life. The only thing that attracts me is love. And whenever I received love I gave love. It’s such an easy rule to follow and if you do the same your life will become so much easier. Free yourself from all the forced relationships in your life and invest in the ones who really care for you, who are really interested to find out how you feel… not because they are curious or jealous but because they really care for you. Find those people in your life, they won’t be many, and concentrate on them! It’s all about them! They will always be there, better to realize that now than to look back in many years and realize that you spend your life with the wrong ones. Believe me, you don’t want that!
