Do more of what makes you happy

You probably heard of this saying before, so did I. Yesterday it came to my mind again.
Yesterday I played volleyball together with friends and colleagues. I hadn’t played volleyball for a while and I had absolutely forgotten how much fun it is. In addition to the we were a perfect group and we just had a lot of fun.
And there this sentence came to my mind again. I think it’s so important to do thinks you like and to keep on finding new things that you like. Seems not so easy in times where we have so many options. Too many options to be clear and in the end most people I know end up not doing anything. They say they could go swimming, skiing, hiking etc. but in the end nothing happens.
There are many reasons for that. Most people work or study and it seems hard to find the energy to do any additional things. Going for dinner or beer seems to be enough. Or maybe a bit more on the weekends.
Many people ask me why I do kung fu. I started already 5 years ago and I usually train 3 times a week for 2 hours each so that quite a lot to most people’s minds. For me it’s the perfect sport, I train my whole body, I learn how to defend myself, I switch off and concentrate on me and my body. No matter if I was studying, working, in a difficult state or busy with others things doing kung fu always made me happy.
I don’t say that everybody should do kung fu now (although it would be great) but it creates so much joy to find some kind of sport, hobby or whatever that you just do for yourself and enjoy completely. Take the time to find something for yourself, it’s absolutely necessary. And don’t give up on it when you have stressful times. It’s important to have time for yourself and if necessary you have to communicate this to the people that are surrounding you as well.
Of course sports should not be used to distract yourself from problems that you’re having at the moment. Many people try it but it never works. But at least they can free your mind and help you to focus and make good decisions. I left out the health and shape advantages as they are obvious and I think inner motivation will never come from trying to be in a good shape. Do it for yourself and it will always be the right thing.
